KAMPALA: March 7, 2022: A team of 50 Ugandan education experts has started a two-day learning visit to different Kenyan Centres of Vocational Excellence.

The group was today flagged off by the Permanent Secretary, Ketty Lamaro at Embassy House in Kampala.“It is my hope that you will learn about new management techniques as well as teaching methodologies that help you better deliver TVET to our learners,” Lamaro said.

“Exposure visits help participants to learn from peer institutions and identify areas where we need to fix back in our institutions,” noted the Permanent Secretary.

The delegation comprises of staff from five Vocational Training Institutions (VTIs) among them; Principals, Accountants, Instructors, ICT Officers, Heads of Departments and Administrators. Others are officials from the Ministry of Education and Sports.   The team will visit three VTIs considered as Centres of Vocational Excellence in the East African region namely; Rift Valley Technical Institute in Nakuru, Eldoret National Polytechnic and Boma International Hospitality College, Nairobi. 

Ham Lukurwe, National Technical Advisor at Enabel said that through the Support to Skilling Uganda (SSU) project, the organisation is supporting 7 VTIs to become Centres of Vocational Excellence.The project aims at increasing the employability of youth through better quality of instruction and making training more responsive to labour market needs.

“We are believing that the best practices learnt during the visit can be replicated in the respective institutions to facilitate their speedy transformation into Centres of Vocational excellence,” Lukurwe noted.     

Supported institutions include; St. Simon Peter’s Vocational Training Centre (Hoima), Uganda Technical College - Kyema (Masindi), St. Joseph’s Technical Institute - Virika (Fort Portal City), Kasese Youth Polytechnic and Millennium Business School (Hoima). Others are; St. Daniel Comboni Polytechnic (Moroto) and Nakapiripirit Technical Institute.

Areas of interest during the visit include; curriculum development, training and assessment, public private partnership opportunities and challenges, application of modern training tools and equipment, staff development as well as work based learning among others.  

The learning visit is jointly organised by Enabel and the Ministry of Education and Sports in partnership with the Kingdom of Belgium.Ends
