Enabel
has partnered with Agriterra to build the capacity of maize and soybean farmer
cooperatives on the production and aggregation and linking them to market.
On October 29th, 2021, in Ngoma
District, an Out-grower Service Company (OSC) was launched and is expected to
improve market growth and competitiveness of soyabeans and maize producers.
In this
partnership, Enabel funded Agriterra and signed a 1M Euro grant agreement for
running the OSC Limited Company to boost 6 farmer Cooperatives in Ngoma District and increase income of 3,000
farmers by producing local quality maize and soybeans for the pig and
poultry feeds.
The Out-grower
Service Company brings solutions
Several factories have been set-up in Rwanda to
process animal feeds, but they all lack sufficient availability of domestic
quality maize and soybean, forcing them to import their raw materials. Most
maize and soybean producers have organized themselves into cooperatives, but
the efficiency of the cooperatives often requires further professionalization
and upscaling.
The objective of the Out-grower
Service Company Limited is to increase the
soybean and maize productivity and supplies of raw materials for animal feed
production and link farmer cooperatives to market. This will increase the income of Rwandan pig
and poultry farmers, while contributing to the reduction of the high cost of feed in
Rwanda.
Participants
in the launching ceremony included representatives from the Ministry of
Agriculture (MINAGRI), Rwanda Agriculture Board (RAB), Agriterra, Ngoma District,
agronomists, Cooperative committees as well as Enabel. Animal feed companies
also participated in the event.
